History of Hoyles

Founder Jack Hoyle was born in Giggleswick in 1914. After leaving school at 14, Jack had several jobs, including radio repairs, stone mason, and electrician, until he eventually settled on the Fire Service in Blackpool. It was here in 1941 that he met and married telephonist Marjorie. They went on to have two sons, David and Neil.  Jack worked his way up to Station Officer and, in 1946, transferred to St Helens Fire Brigade as Assistant Chief Fire Officer.

David and Neil earn their pocket money. Bob a Job!

In 1965 after retiring from the Fire Service, Jack decided to start a business selling and servicing fire extinguishers, installing fire alarms and emergency lighting. J Hoyle & Sons was born. This was very definitely a family business. Marjorie did the books and sewed up fire blankets on the kitchen table. Neil took the lead on the extinguisher servicing and David, an electrical engineer, installed intruder alarms.

The Exhibition was held at Parr Stocks Road Fire Station St Helens in 1965 at an exhibition announced the start of the business.

Jack died in 1975, and the business continued in the safe hands of David and Neil. The Hoyles business was split to reflect the company’s activities better and was renamed Hoyles Fire & Safety Ltd and Hoyles Electronic Developments Ltd. In 1981 the business moved to larger purpose-built premises in Rainford and soon after started a screen printing venture. A catalogue was produced, and safety signs were sold by mail order and through direct sales by Hoyles Fire & Safety’s service engineers.

Lindsay, Dave’s daughter, joined the company in 1987 and took responsibility for the signs department. The companies continued to grow, supplying installers and wholesalers throughout the UK, Europe, and the Middle East. In 1996 NuSwift acquired Hoyles Fire & Safety Ltd, however, the ownership of Hoyles Electronic Developments remains with the Hoyle family. Sadly in 2005, Neil died suddenly. Stephen his son, joined the business a few months later. David wound down his commitment to the company leaving the day-to-day management and decision-making to the third generation.  From filling fire extinguishers in the 60s, to this day, the business has gone from strength to strength, now designing and manufacturing specialist security, access, fire and safety products and solutions which support customers across the UK and around the world.
